IMAN Mobilizies community Members for May 1st March
Over the last 3 years IMAN has been successful at mobilizing community members to demonstrate their opposition to basic human rights violations facing Latino and other immigrants. This dedication can be confirmed through the Annual May Day March in which IMAN has continuously mobilized at least one bus of IMAN supporters and community members. IMAN's organizing and advocacy work for Immigration reform grew out of its direct work with Latino Day Laborers on Chicago's Southwest Side. This work resulted in the recovery of $10,000 in stolen wages for day laborers over a short period of time.
On Thursday May 1st IMAN through the United Congress of Community and Religious Organizations (UCCRO) joined the May Day March with key organizations of color in the spirit of unity and solidarity to call for a moratorium on raids, an end to the separation of families, an end to a system of exploitation of undocumented labor, a living wage for workers, and a comprehensive and humane path to citizenship for America's undocumented. Despite this year's smaller turnout the energy and spirit exhibited from Union Park to Federal Plaza reflected that the immigrant rights movement remains strong. IMAN advocacy is not simply about fighting for equal rights of immigrants, but also about building trust and friendship between Latinos and Muslims. This unique relationship between these two constituents has led to one of the strongest visibilities of Muslim activism on Immigration rights |
